A convicted sex offender who absconded from supervision is back in custody in Nevada following a joint investigation by the Nevada State Police and the U.S. Marshals Service.

Jonas Ortiz was arrested on November 13, 2025, in San Francisco, California, by the U.S. Marshals Service. He was wanted in Nevada for a parole violation after absconding from supervision in May of 2025.

Ortiz was convicted on March 22, 1990, of sexual assault of a minor under 14 and first-degree kidnapping. He was sentenced to 60 months to life in prison.

A joint fugitive investigation by the Nevada State Police Division of Parole and Probation Warrants and Extraditions Unit and the U.S. Marshals Service Nevada Violent Offender Task Force in Reno led to his arrest.

On March 2, officers with the Division of Parole and Probation extradited Ortiz from California to Nevada. He is now in custody at the Washoe County Jail.

The U.S. Marshals Service Nevada Violent Offender Task Force in Northern Nevada combines state, local, and federal resources to locate and arrest violent fugitives.
