The Douglas County Sheriff's Office released more details on a deadly police shooting that happened November 8th in Gardnerville.
During Tuesday's press conference, Sheriff Dan Coverley showed bodycam video of events leading up to the deadly shooting.
Deputies say they interacted with the suspect, 16-year-old John Brown 18 times prior to the incident, for various reasons including drug charges, saying the interactions were 'Nothing major, nothing super significant."
Deputies say previously they were initially called to a home on Pit Road for a report of a mother whose son, John Brown had assaulted her with a gun and then fled. The mother also told authorities that he tried to steal a car, on the same road. Police say when Brown and a second person he was with, failed to steal the car, the duo ran away toward Tillman Lane.
Eventually, officers say they found Brown with a gun on his lap, inside a car on Short Court.Â
When they ordered Brown to get out of the car, they refused and that's when Brown and deputies exchanged gunfire - Brown was killed while one unidentified deputy was shot in the hand, suffering non-life-threatening injuries. Sheriff Coverely later said that the deputy was shot by a fellow deputy, not Brown.
Deputies say the second person, a 16-year-old was arrested and booked into the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center on robbery charges.Â
During the press conference, Sheriff Coverely confirmed that the gun that Brown used was not real but because deputies did not know that, they responded as if that weapon was real.
The deputy that was hit in the hand has since had surgery with the eventual goal of returning to duty.
The Carson City Sheriff's Office and Nevada State Police are handling the investigation
Sheriff Coverley went on to say that this is the only police shooting in Douglas County this year.
