Family and friends of 14-year-old Lexi Rodriguez held a vigil in her honor Monday night. Lexi was killed Sunday night when crossing the street in Carson City after she was hit by a car.

It was a beautiful vigil filled with lots of tears, candles, and all kinds of emotions.

We spoke with Lexi's family who tell us this is a heartbreaking moment that no family should ever have to deal with, but to see dozens upon dozens of people show up to honor her shows how much she will be missed.

Rachel Valenzuela, Lexi's aunt, said, "It feels really amazing to be honest. I feel a lot of support, I see a lot of people here, and it's more than I could ever imagine. We come from California and it's just really unexpected so to get this all together within less than a day, it's turned out amazing, and it just shows what a good, loving, person she is to a lot of people."

Although street fixtures exist on both sides of the street and crosswalk where Rodriguez was crossing, her family is making it clear that that's not enough. In fact, I watched a man attempt to bike across that exact same crosswalk in broad daylight and almost got hit by a vehicle.

Topanga Jackson, Lexi's older sister, also witnessed it. "Fifteen minutes earlier someone was on a bike and almost got hit and I could not even imagine someone else going through this."

An officer who happened to be in the area, pulled over the car that did not stop for the man crossing. This is why Lexi's family is using her vigil to also raise awareness.

"I'm just going to be spreading awareness on one, slowing down and paying attention and two, there's a petition already trying to get a lot of signatures to be brought to town hall for flashing lights so that way this doesn't happen again," Jackson explained.

Friends and family tell me what she was like as a person.

Louisa Valenzuela, Lexi's cousin, said, "She was beautiful, she was a beautiful soul, she was very outgoing."

Jackson added, "She brought light into every room, she cared about every person she met, she was a genuinely kind person."

Cesar, Lexi's friend, tells us, "She was really sweet, very kind, very smart, she was a cheerleader for a football team... She was really great at it. She loved makeup and eyelashes; she would always try to put eyelashes on me every time I would go over to her house."

Brianna Garcia, Lexi's best friend, says that it's hard to believe she's no longer here, "It was just on a Saturday I had my 15th, and she was here, and we were talking about summer and all of our plans and the next day she's gone."

Carson City Sheriff's Office encourages anyone that has any information regarding the crash to contact them at 775-887-2677.

The family is asking the community to go to the Carson City Pizza Factory this Friday, February 2nd. 10% of proceeds will be going towards Lexi's funeral.
