TMWA Smart About Water Community Day

A day focused on water, science and the future of the region’s supply is returning to Reno, offering people a chance to get a closer look at how it all works.

Truckee Meadows Water Authority is marking 25 years of managing the region’s municipal water resources with its annual Smart About Water Day. The free event is set for Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the California Building in Idlewild Park.

Organizers say the event is designed to bring the community face to face with the people and systems behind the area’s water. Scientists, technicians and planning experts will be on hand to answer questions about water management, water quality and long-term planning.

Throughout the day, people can learn about investments made over the past 25 years to secure the region’s water supply, how drinking water is tested, and how growth and climate variability are shaping future decisions. There will also be information on conservation efforts, watershed protection and new technology, including advanced water purification as a potential future resource.

The event also includes activities for children, including a scavenger hunt and interactive science displays. Large equipment used in water operations will be on site for people to explore, and food trucks will be available.

Several regional organizations are expected to take part, including groups focused on planning, research and environmental protection.

Presentations will run throughout the day beginning at 10:30 a.m., covering topics such as the region’s water supply outlook, long-term facility planning and progress on a new purified water treatment project.

Organizers say the event is held once each year and is intended to give the public a better understanding of where their water comes from and how it is managed.
