A man has been arrested after his gun was found by a five-year-old at Andelin Farm on Thursday.
A father approached Washoe County Sheriff's Office deputies after his child found the gun in a port-a-potty and gave them the gun.
While deputies investigated, a man reported losing their gun at the farm. That man gave authorities the gun's serial number, which matched the gun found by the child, according to a release from the WCSO.
The man, identified as 21-year-old Ernesto Guzman, was arrested and booked into the Washoe County Detention Facility on charges of gross misdemeanor reckless endangerment and misdemeanor unsafe storage of a firearm.
In a social media post, the child's mom said this is a good reminder to teach kids about gun safety.
Andelin Family Farm owner Cameron Andelin issued a statement to 2 News Nevada following the incident. It can be read in its entirety below.
"We are aware of an incident in which a child discovered a firearm inside a portable restroom at our farm. The child appropriately notified a parent without touching or handling the firearm. The parent then alerted an on-duty Washoe County Sheriff's deputy stationed at the farm, who secured and took the firearm into possession.
Our farm security team has identified the owner of the firearm, and we understand that criminal charges are being pursued.
The safety of our guests and staff is our highest priority. We maintain an on-site security team, including law enforcement personnel, to keep the farm as safe as possible.
We take this incident very seriously and are reviewing the circumstances to determine whether additional safety measures can be implemented.
We commend the child for making the responsible decision to notify an adult, and parents that taught their child about firearm safety. We appreciate the prompt response of our security team and the Sheriff's Office. We are so grateful that this incident ended the way it did. We remain committed to providing a safe, family-friendly experience for our community."
