Law enforcement agencies across Nevada joined forces this past weekend in a statewide effort to remove impaired drivers from the roads while honoring a fallen trooper.
On Saturday, July 29, law enforcement agencies across Nevada participated in the fourth annual “May You Choose Not to Drive Impaired” campaign, named in memory of Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Micah May, who was killed in the line of duty by an impaired driver in 2021.
The statewide operation focused on identifying and arresting suspected impaired drivers and increasing roadway safety.
According to the Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division, the coordinated effort resulted in 541 traffic stops, 333 citations issued, 39 suspected impaired drivers arrested, and 2 felony arrests.
“On July 29, 2021, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Micah May sacrificed his life in the line of duty while protecting the people of Nevada,” the agency stated.
Multiple law enforcement departments joined the campaign, including the Nevada Highway Patrol, Elko County Sheriff’s Office, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, North Las Vegas Police Department, Clark County School Police Department, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, University of Nevada Reno Police Department, Reno Police Department, Sparks Police Department, and the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony Police Department.
The campaign is funded by the Nevada Department of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety.
The update follows the original announcement of the campaign, which noted that Joanna May, Trooper May’s widow, would once again join officers for a ride-along in his honor. This year marked her fourth time participating in the campaign.
