Mormon Crickets are starting to pop up all over Northern Nevada with people recently seeing them in the Spanish Springs area.

All of the Mormon Crickets in our area have hatched, which is why people are seeing so many of them.

Some residents in Spanish Springs couldn't believe how many they have seen the past few days.

"I opened up the back gate and just went 'oh my god,' the ground is just covered in them, all the way. I walked a good half mile, and it's like an army marching along and it was scary," said Bob Barry.

According to the Nevada Department of Agriculture, this time of year is when we will see the highest number of Mormon Crickets.

As we get into the summer months, they will continue to migrate, and natural causes will begin decreasing their population size.

Mormon Crickets are omnivores, so they will eat almost anything including meat and plants.

This had made homeowners worry about their property, but Jeff Knight with the Department of Agriculture says there is a solution.

"One of the things we recommend for people is cricket fences and that is just plastic that is stacked up 24 inches high and sealed to the ground. These crickets never fly, and they will never have wings, so they are always crawling, and they hit the plastic and go around it," said Jeff Knight, entomologist with the Department of Agriculture.

Knight also added that he wants people to report any sightings of Mormon Crickets, as it helps them track their movements.
