Law enforcement agencies across Nevada are recognizing National Police Week by honoring officers serving communities throughout the state and remembering those who died in the line of duty.
Agencies and leaders are sharing messages of appreciation and remembrance through public statements and social media posts during the national observance.
The Storey County Sheriff's Office shared a message online recognizing the history and purpose of National Police Week.
“In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.”
The agency also encouraged the community to remember officers who died while serving others.
“This week, join us in remembering and honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Gone but never forgotten.”
U.S. Sen. Jacky Rosen released a statement Monday recognizing officers across Nevada.
“Our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to keep Nevadans safe – often going above and beyond to build trust and foster relationships in our communities,” Rosen said. “Today and always, we thank the police officers who work tirelessly to maintain law and order in Nevada, and we honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. In the Senate, I’ve always worked across party lines to deliver the federal resources our police departments need to continue doing their jobs safely and effectively – and I’ll always stand with law enforcement.”
National Police Week is observed each year to recognize the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers nationwide.
