A mother and her child are dead after the Lyon County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of domestic violence in Silver Springs, leading to a shooting in a bedroom where two people were barricaded.

It happened around 5 p.m. at a home on Spring Circle, according to a release from the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.

When deputies arrived, they spoke with a man who let them know that a woman, 38-year old Haylie Baggett of Silver Springs, had barricaded herself in a bedroom with her three-year-old.

Deputies attempted to communicate with Baggett through the door, asking her to come out safely with the child.

After several minutes with no progress, deputies decided to force their way into the bedroom. As they entered, Baggett shot the child, then turned the weapon on herself.

Deputies began life-saving efforts on the child, who was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center via Careflight. The child later succumbed to the gunshot injury.

Baggett was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division has taken control of the scene. The investigation is active and ongoing.

The Sheriff's Office says there is no threat to public safety at this time.
