America250 Nevada

Washoe County is stepping into a nationwide celebration with a simple invitation: come inside and take a moment.

As communities across the country prepare for America250, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, Washoe County will join the statewide effort beginning in January.

The Washoe County Courthouse Historical and Preservation Society is launching a yearlong series of monthly commemoration ceremonies at the Historic Courthouse.

Starting in January, the courthouse’s columned entrance will open one day each month for a public gathering focused on history, democracy, and community. Shortly after 8 a.m., the Court will pause for a Moment of Honor led by a local champion of democracy. That person will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, introduce a local musical artist to perform a patriotic song, and present a historical figure significant to the nation’s 250 years, with the possibility of a special appearance tied to the presentation.

The first event is scheduled for January 14, with Second Judicial District Court Judge Barry Breslow welcoming the gathering.

The lineup of monthly champions continues through the year, bringing a mix of county, city, and community leaders to the courthouse steps.
