Reducing wildfire risk is the focus of a planned prescribed burn east of Gardnerville.
The Bureau of Land Management Carson City District plans to burn 209 acres of slash piles along Upper Sunrise Pass Road in the Pinenut Mountains. The area is east of Gardnerville.
Burning is scheduled to take place between January 6 and April 30. Officials said ignitions will only occur when weather and fuel conditions allow crews to burn safely.
The project is designed to reduce the amount of vegetation that could feed a future wildfire and to improve safety along the roadway.
“Burning will reduce the amount fuels available to a potential future wildfire, creating a strategic roadside fuelbreak along Pinenut Road,” said Jonathan Palma, Fire Management Officer.
BLM wildland fire resources will be on scene during burning operations. The work is expected to take place over about 15 to 20 days, spread out over periods of stable weather rather than on consecutive days.
Smoke may be visible during burning periods.
