The Reno Housing Authority just opened waitlists today for their public housing sites and several other assistance programs.

This comes as the Reno Housing Authority has been working with community leaders to build and open more affordable housing projects.

The opening for these waitlists is an opportunity for the community who may be struggling to find housing to have an opportunity to join one or more waitlists to help them find a home in a more affordable price bracket.

The waitlists will remain open until April 25th.

They also have kiosks in their main lobby or in the downtown Reno Library, where applicants can access those forms as well.

Dr. Hilary Lopez, the Executive Director at the Reno Housing Authority says, "At the Reno Housing Authority, we’ve been serving Washoe County for more than 80 years and we’re very proud of the work that we’ve done. We’re always exploring opportunities to bring more housing resources; whether that’s units or other types of housing resources.”

Dr. Lopez adds, "We currently are working on several new housing projects; one of which is the redevelopment of our former Hawk View housing site where we had 100 units of public housing - and we’re currently just starting construction to redevelop that site to 200 units of long term resident housing for our community."

They also recently opened 15 units of affordable housing within the downtown Sparks area.

Dr. Lopez says the reason they're so passionate about affordable housing is to keep people from becoming homeless or to help those who are already.

The Reno Housing Authority currently manages 22 different waitlists that provide several hundred units of housing located throughout the county.

Dr. Lopez explains, "The Housing Choice Voucher Waitlist—or what was formerly known as the 'Section Eight' program—allows for a household to receive a voucher and then use that voucher to find housing of their choice within the private market. Our waitlists that are currently open are more property-based waitlists, so it would be for units and apartments that are available either at our public housing properties, our project based voucher properties, or at specific housing properties."
