In partnership with the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, the Reno Police Department's Traffic Division conducted pedestrian safety operations in August.

During the month, ten officers were specifically enforcing laws within designated pedestrian safety zones downtown, and also other areas with high pedestrian traffic.

There was also a specific pedestrian crosswalk operation that took place on August 30.

During the operation, the department focused their efforts on drivers and pedestrians that were breaking laws that enhance pedestrian safety.

Officers issued 126 traffic citations, gave 29 warnings, and arrested three people for DUI during the operations.

Nevada state law requires pedestrians to use sidewalks, crosswalks and pedestrian bridges and obey all traffic-control signs and signals.

If there is no sidewalk, pedestrians must walk on the left side of the street, facing traffic.

For drivers, they must yield to pedestrians and avoid passing vehicles that are stopped for pedestrians.

A good rule of thumb for all is to, "Look Up, Look Out."Â
