Hanukkah in Downtown Reno with the Chabad of Northern Nevada

U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen and the local community are responding after a father and son killed at least 15 people during a Hanukkah event at Sydney’s Bondi Beach.

The U.S. Senator released a statement regarding the shooting in Australia.

Senator Jackey Rosen stated, “Our hearts go out to the Australian people as they deal with the aftermath of a horrific attack that targeted Jews on the first night of Hanukkah. We extend our condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed and are praying for the full recovery of those injured."

Senator Jacky Rosen also added that she plans to continue the fight against antisemitism.

"This is a fight that transcends politics or ideology, and we are united behind a shared goal: ensuring Jews in the United States and around the world can practice their faith openly without fear of violence,” Senator Jacky Rosen also stated.

Chabad of Northern Nevada is also hoping to bring the community together by holding the 26th Annual City of Reno Menorah Lighting on the first night of Chanukah.

Community members gathered at the Believe Sign in downtown Reno for the city's annual Menorah Lighting ceremony.

The event takes place on Sunday, December 14, at 4:30 p.m. at City Plaza in front of the iconic Believe Sign.

According to organizers, the event is free and open to anyone. The event features live music, remarks from local and state representatives, traditional Chanukah blessings, the Menorah lighting, dancing, and Chanukah-themed swag.

Organizers also say that because of the shooting that occurred in Australia, they're hoping for a big turnout.

“This year, our hearts are broken after the tragic shooting in Bondi Beach, Australia,” said Rabbi Mendel Cunin, director of Chabad of Northern Nevada. “We will not be intimidated. I urge everyone to stand strong and light the Menorah at home all eight nights of Chanukah.

Organizers say the Reno Police Department will provide security for the event.
