Florence Drake Elementary School in Sparks has received a national recognition for its success in educating special populations of students.

The selection was made by the National Association of ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act) State Program Administrators, and announced by the Nevada Department of Education.

Drake was recognized specifically for their work with students who are homeless, migrant students, English learners and students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).

Just two schools in each state receive this recognition.

In receiving the recognition, Drake Elementary was praised for:

  • raising its proficiency rates in math, English Language Arts, and science for all student groups including special needs students and English Learners from 2022 to 2024
  • meeting proficiency goals in 2023 for students who are homeless
  • meeting the state's Minimum Improvement Plans (MIPs) for all groups of students from 2022 to 2024

We believe our students can achieve high expectations, and we support all learners through a high-performance intervention model. Every teacher is committed to enhanced professional learning and continuous instructional improvement," says Drake Elementary Principal Jason Shipman.
