UPDATE - OCTOBER 30, 2025:Â
On Friday, October 31, Stoker Avenue will reopen underneath Interstate 80 in west Reno, marking a milestone in a continuing Nevada Department of Transportation project to repave and widen the interstate.
Since January, Stoker Avenue has been closed between Stardust and West Fourth streets as the south I-80 bridge over Stoker Avenue was widened to give room to construct an auxiliary merge lane on eastbound I-80.
Crews installed 114,000 pounds of reinforcing steel to widen the bridge.
With Stoker Avenue open, crews will continue to repave, widen, and improve more than one mile of I-80 between west McCarran Boulevard and Keystone Avenue.
Drivers should plan ahead and leave extra travel time for the following traffic changes through summer 2026:
Interstate Lane Shifts and Speed Reductions
- Lanes are slightly reduced in width and shifted in the work zone 24/7.
- Speeds are reduced to 55 mph through the work zone.
- Interstate drivers can anticipate moderate travel delays through the work zone.
Overnight Lane and Ramp Closures
- At least two interstate lanes will remain open in each direction during daytime hours.
- Interstate lanes will additionally be reduced to a minimum of one lane between 10 p.m.–5 a.m. weekdays.
- Intermittent overnight ramp closures of the west McCarran Boulevard and Keystone Avenue ramps to I-80 take place between 9 p.m.–5 a.m. Sunday evenings through Friday mornings. No two consecutive ramps will be closed in the same direction, and detour routes will be marked.
- The construction schedule is weather permitting and subject to change.
- Motorists should also anticipate intermittent overnight lane reductions on McCarran Boulevard and Keystone Avenue near I-80 between 8 p.m.–6 a.m. nightly.
- Additional traffic control, such as lane reductions, may take place on Stoker Avenue between Stardust and West Fourth streets.
The project will make the following improvements:
- Resurface both directions of I-80 between McCarran Boulevard and Keystone Avenue.
- An auxiliary merge lane will also be added on eastbound I-80 between Western McCarran Boulevard and Keystone Avenue, providing additional merge opportunities for enhanced traffic safety and mobility.
- Approximately 8,000 linear feet of sound wall will be added in certain areas to help reduce traffic sound impacts for surrounding neighborhoods.
- Select interstate bridges will also be resurfaced and improved, and the I-80 bridge over Stoker Avenue will be widened.
- Roadside drainage, signage, lighting, and wrong-way driver detection systems will be enhanced.
- Certain existing roadside trees will be removed for the interstate widening, with more than 400 deciduous and evergreen trees adapted to the northern Nevada climate planted in the area.
ORIGINAL STORY - JANUARY 7, 2025:Â
A section of Stoker Avenue in west Reno will be temporarily closed under Interstate 80 starting in mid-January.
Prior to the closure, there will be intermittent overnight lane reductions on Stoker Avenue between Stardust and West Fourth Street from 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. nightly Sunday evening through Friday mornings.
Then, in mid-January, that same stretch of Stoker Avenue will be closed 24/7. The anticipated start date of the closure is January 20.
Pedestrian traffic will also be affected, as the sidewalk on the west side of Stoker Avenue will be closed for the duration of the project - pedestrians are being asked to use the sidewalk on the east side of the street.
Officials do want to note that businesses nearby will remain open and accessible while the section of road is closed.
This closure is a part of the overall project of adding a new merge lane on eastbound I-80 between McCarran Boulevard and Keystone Avenue - the bridge above Stoker Avenue is being widened to accommodate the new lane.
