Two people have been arrested on murder charges following the death of their three-month-old son due to starvation and dehydration.

On Saturday, April 5, detectives with the Sparks Police Department were called to Saint Mary's after 22-year-old Giovonnye Hart and 23-year-old Hailey Moniz brought their son to the emergency room.

Hospital staff found the baby to be unresponsive with only a faint heartbeat. Life-saving measures were attempted, but the boy was ultimately pronounced dead.

The child appeared extremely malnourished, dehydrated, and unkempt, according to a release from the Sparks Police Department.

This led investigators to search the couple's home, which was found to be littered with garbage, old food, mold, feces, and no running water.

An autopsy by the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the baby's cause of death to be infant malnutrition/starvation, dehydration.

On Thursday, Hart and Moniz were arrested for murder, first degree, in perpetration or attempted perpetration of abuse of a child under 14 years of age, as well as child neglect.

Both suspects are being held at the Washoe County Jail.

The couple also has two other children, according to the release.

Those children are currently in the custody of Washoe County Child Protective Services.
