There is a chance this weekend to help give children in the community something many may not otherwise have: a bike of their own.
The Reno Bike Project is inviting volunteers to take part in its FreeWheels 4 Kids event, where people will help tune up bikes before they are given to children in need.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Reno Bike Project Production Center, located at 635 E. 4th St., Reno.
Organizers say volunteers of all skill levels are welcome, whether they have experience working on bikes or are new to it. Tools and guidance will be provided to help get each bike ready.
The goal is to make sure every bike is safe and ready before it goes to a new home. Organizers say the program is focused on providing bikes to children who may not otherwise have the opportunity to own one.
A bike can offer more than transportation, giving children a way to explore, build confidence, and gain independence.
No signup is required for the event, and volunteers can come and go as they are able. People are encouraged to bring friends or family members. Closed-toed shoes and clothes that can get dirty are recommended, along with a refillable water bottle.
For those who cannot attend, organizers say donations are another way to support the program, including donating children’s bikes or contributing online.
