The Washoe County Board of Commissioners chose interim County Manager Kate Thomas to take over the role permanently.
"She is ready for this challenge. [She] has already initiated a lot of the things that this board has asked of leadership to do," said Commission Chair Alexis Hill.
Hill says she liked Thomas's experience and dedication to issues facing Washoe County. Thomas said her first priority is helping at-risk groups.
"We're facing a lot of challenges with senior populations and those that are facing homelessness," Thomas said.Â
Thomas adds that Washoe County has "got a housing crisis that we're coming into. I think the more strategic we are as an organization and with the vision of the board, we are up for the challenge."
Washoe County's work environment came under scrutiny under previous manager Eric Brown. Brown retired after a third-party consulting firm recommended a "reset" between the commissioners and the manager's office.
Thomas said her career to this point has been focused on improving culture.
"Having a good culture here is something that's worth achieving," she said. "I think that there's some great ideas from employees, and I've got some of my own on how to really get that culture focused forward."
Thomas did not share what those ideas were specifically, but in her previous roles, she says she's prioritized wellness centers and childcare.
Thomas joined Washoe County as assistant county manager in 2017. Before that, she worked with the City of Reno as assistant city manager. She's also worked as the Nevada Deputy Secretary of State for Operations.
Hill assures us, "Kate Thomas is the next leader for Washoe County. and we're in good hands with her."
Thomas will continue to serve as interim manager until her contract is finalized on or before January 5.
This past weekend, the county held a meet-and-greet with finalists.Â
The other finalists included James Doar, current county administrator for Gallatin County, Montana; Laura Freed, director of administration at the Regional Transportation Commission; and Tyler Stone, chief administrative officer of Wasco County, Oregon.
Washoe County manager finalist candidates met with the public, listening to their concerns ahead of someone being chosen to fill the position.
