The Washoe County Sheriff's Office, along with their onsite correctional healthcare partner, NaphCare, Inc., proudly announced an expansion of their detention facility's Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and Opioid Treatment programs.
In expanding these programs, which allow for the administering of medications for opioid use disorder, they aim to further lower the risk of relapse and fatal overdosing among patients while also promoting the long-term recovery of their inmates.
Washoe County Sheriff's Office is the only detention facility in the State of Nevada to earn certification as an OTP by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to provide opioid treatments within a jail.
In a research article published by BioMed Central in their Health and Justice Journal, research shows that opioid use is much higher among inmates compared to the general population and that those recently released from prison face a higher risk of fatal drug overdose.
With an expansion of its MAT and OTP programs, upon incarceration, the Washoe County Sheriff's Detention Facility can better manage patients who suffer from opioid use disorder by providing consistent care and support throughout their imprisonment as well as their reintegration into the community.
In 2021, the Washoe County Sheriff's Detention Facility received accreditation from the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) for meeting its standards for Opioid Treatment Programs in correctional facilities.
In 2025, the Washoe County Detention Facility was awarded the Pinnacle Award, the highest distinction in correctional health care, by the NCCHC, recognizing the detention facility’s NCCHC accreditation across three distinct service areas, including jail health services, mental health services, and opioid treatment programs. This marking only the third Pinnacle Award ever granted in the nation.
The Washoe County Sheriff's Office says it recently renewed its contract with NaphCare, Inc., showing its commitment to the safety and well-being of the 1,200 patients it serves, stating that NaphCare will continue to oversee its medical, mental health, dental, and pharmaceutical healthcare services, including the life-saving MAT and OTP programs.
