The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office has released a 20-minute documentary-style video titled “Fatal Dose: The Rise of Fentanyl in Our Community,” which addresses the increasing impact of fentanyl in the region.

The video provides an in-depth examination of how the synthetic opioid is affecting individuals, families, and community systems.

Through a series of firsthand accounts, the video features perspectives from people affected by fentanyl use, family members, and professionals working in prevention, enforcement, and rehabilitation.

The goal is to inform the public about the nature and scale of the crisis while outlining ongoing response efforts.

“Fentanyl isn’t just a national crisis, it’s right here in the community of Washoe County,” said Sheriff Darin Balaam. “We’re seeing it in our streets, our neighborhoods, and our detention facility. We produced this video to not only educate and spread awareness, but also to save lives.”

The Sheriff’s Office is also working within the Washoe County Detention Facility to support people impacted by substance use. Current strategies include:

  • Addiction treatment programs for inmates
  • Access to mental health support services
  • Medication-assisted treatment (MAT)
  • Comprehensive reentry planning and resources

These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to address the opioid epidemic through a combination of prevention, education, enforcement, and rehabilitation.

The Sheriff’s Office is encouraging local residents, educators, community groups, and media outlets to view and share the video as part of its awareness campaign.
