A car hit an Australian federal independent lawmaker on Monday, critically injuring her in a potentially deliberate act, police said. The driver was arrested. Helen Haines, 65, was struck by a Toyota Land Cruiser outside her electoral district office in Victoria. The 43-year-old driver was arrested at the scene. Police are investigating whether the act was intentional. Haines was taken to a hospital with critical injuries. The incident has renewed safety concerns for Australian lawmakers. Public incitement against officials is growing, with threats against parliamentarians doubling over the past three years.
