Cassandra Wilson, the two-time Grammy-winning jazz singer, has died. She was 70. Her manager said she died in her native Jackson, Mississippi, surrounded by family and friends. The local coroner said she died Tuesday but did not release a cause. Wilson was known for her unique contralto and her ability to blend jazz with blues, folk, pop and country. She was hailed as America’s best singer by Time Magazine in 2001 and won two Grammys for best jazz vocal album. In 2022, she was honored as a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master. Tributes to her have celebrated her impact on music and her Mississippi roots.
