Interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada Sigal Chattah says that President Donald Trump has appointed her as the acting attorney for the state.

Chattah spoke with sister station KLAS-TV in Las Vegas regarding the update. According to Chattah, she resigned from her position as the Interim U.S. Attorney before the 120-day deadline expired.

When that happened, it triggered the Federal Vacancy Act, which she says allowed the president to appoint her as the new Acting U.S. Attorney for Nevada, allowing her to retain her position indefinitely.

The position of Acting U.S. Attorney requires a minimum term of 210 days in office, and has no cap on term duration.

Chattah also says that the president appointed her as a Special Attorney to the U.S. Attorney General, giving her a dual role.

Nevada Senators Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez-Masto both released statements condemning the move.

"This is an outrageous attempt by the Trump Administration to try to install extremist Sigal Chattah as Acting U.S. Attorney for Nevada and keep her in that role indefinitely. Trump knows Chattah would be soundly rejected by both sides of the aisle if she had to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate, which is why he’s relying on an unconstitutional maneuver to illegally extend her temporary appointment that was set to expire today,” said Senator Rosen.

"I will continue doing everything I can to block any permanent appointment of extremist Sigal Chattah as Nevada’s U.S. Attorney. She is deeply unfit for this role, and I call on the legal system to immediately remove her."

Senator Cortez Masto shared similar sentiments, saying, “By bypassing the Senate and naming Sigal Chattah as an 'acting' U.S. attorney, it’s clear the Trump administration knows Ms. Chattah is unconfirmable. This unprecedented maneuver sets a dangerous standard and risks holding up critical criminal cases just so that President Trump can play political games. At the end of the day, my position remains the same: Sigal Chattah is unfit for this role."

The Department of Justice has updated their official website to reflect the Chattah's new title. She was never formally nominated to the post, which usually requires confirmation.
