The Nevada DMV now has an avenue for people to file complaints regarding unregistered vehicles.
Through this new form, the DMV will be compiling data so it can better look into issues brought up by the public and find out where they are occurring most often.
The Nevada DMV says this idea came to fruition based on public feedback.
Paolo David, the Public Information Officer for the Nevada DMV, says, "A lot of complaints are coming from the public, and they are sending us either emails or phone calls. Do they know someone who has an unregistered vehicle? And they just want an avenue or a platform to actually complain about it and figure out a way to resolve this problem."
He added, "There are a lot of unregistered vehicles on the road, and it is quite unfair for a lot of people who are actually registering their vehicles and providing for the highway fund to actually maintain this highway."
Once you submit a form, the DMV compiles the data depending on jurisdiction, and then its compliance enforcement department will either act on it or provide something for law enforcement to work on.
David says, "We're going to try and focus on concentrated places that are unregistered. It provides us the data on how to move forward with it."
One resident we spoke to told us she never notices this issue because she doesn't look for it. She says she doesn't see the need to report these tags and tells us why.
"No, I would not because I don't feel that that's anyone's responsibility except for maybe law enforcement," said Patty Elder, a Sparks resident.
She adds, "No, I would not just because I don't think more apps to turn people in for something -- most people are going to be responsible; I just don't think it's necessary."
David also reminds the public that having unregistered tags is illegal.
"There are a lot of people out there who are unregistered," he said. "The funds that go into the registration actually go into the highway fund to protect and maintain the roads properly, so if you want to keep Nevada's roads properly maintained, please, please, please do register your vehicle."
