A routine fire prevention project could bring visible smoke to parts of the north valleys this weekend.
The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District plans to conduct pile burn operations Sunday, March 8, weather permitting, at the Silver Lake Volunteer Fire Station at 11525 Red Rock Road. Crews plan to ignite about 40 piles as part of the work.
Officials said smoke might affect the Red Rock area during the operation. Drivers on Red Rock Road are asked to use caution because visibility could be limited at times.
People who live in the Silver Lake and North Valleys areas could also see or smell smoke if weather conditions create inversions after the piles are ignited.
Fire crews will attend the pile burns at all times during the operation.
Officials also advise people who are sensitive to smoke to stay indoors or limit time outside, and keep windows and doors closed if smoke moves into the area.
Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District officials also asked people not to call emergency dispatch centers about the planned smoke.
“Please don’t report smoke in the area to our local dispatch centers.”
