The Nevada Republican Party is holding its state central committee meeting in Winnemucca this weekend with a big focus being on the party's presidential caucus.
Party leaders from across the state are finalizing the rules for the February 8th caucus, which is just two days after the state mandated presidential preference primary.
As we've been reporting, the party is putting forth an ultimatum to candidates - if you participate in the state primary - you cannot participate in the caucus.
"Incase nobody is aware, the presidential preference primary that the state is pushing, it really does not have any significance on who the Republican Party chooses to send their delegates to at the national convention. The national convention is where our candidate for president will be chosen. However, prior to that national convention, we will hold a state convention and if you do not attend your caucus meeting, then your voice will not be heard," explained Washoe County Republican Party Chair Bruce Parks.
The state party is getting pushback from critics who say the caucus is heavily tilted in favor of former president Donald Trump.
"Having the caucus two days after the primary is certainly going to be confusing for voters, and their exclusionary rules for candidates. Charging them $55-thousand dollars, saying they can't take part in the actually state mandated primary, all together those are going to drastically reduce the number of voters that can take part and reduce the number of candidates who can take part. What you're going to get is Trump and maybe a couple of other candidates, and the base support that already favors Trump," said Public Affairs Specialist and Nevada Independent Columnist Michael Schaus. "
Some campaigns are pulling resource out of Nevada. We spoke to the Pro-Ron DeSantis Super PAC Never Back Down who pulled their door knocking operation out of Nevada.
"Right now the Chairman of the Nevada GOP is taking control on behalf of the Trump campaign of the rather dramatic change of the rules including by the way suppressing first amendment rights of organizations like ours," said Never Back Down Founder and Director and former Deputy of Homeland Security Ken Cuccinelli.
The Nevada Republican Club, which represents 400 members, wrote a letter to the Nevada GOP raising concerns about "frustrating" and "confusing" Nevada Republican voters, and whether there are enough volunteers to staff all 17 counties across the caucus.
Nevada GOP Chairman Michael McDonald has close ties with Donald Trump serving in the 2020 fake electors scheme in Nevada to overturn Trump's loss.
McDonald says he's remaining nonaligned and focusing on getting candidates to commit to the caucus.
"I have to remain neutral and we have to give everyone an opportunity to come in. We're happy to have them come out. I talked to almost every candidate last night. It's going to be a great opportunity. They can't wait to come to Nevada, they want to participate in our caucus," said Nevada Republican Party Chairman Michael McDonald.
It was announced earlier the week that Tech Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy is the only candidate to commit to the caucus so far.Â
