The Reno Pops Orchestra, Reno's nonprofit local orchestra, is fundraising for its next concert. The fundraiser will be held at Baldini's Sports Casino in Sparks on Saturday, February 10.
The Reno Pops Orchestra has been putting on free concerts in the area for the last four decades.
"We're a community orchestra that's been around since 1982," said Board President Kathy Walton. "We offer free concerts to the community. We say free, but we hope people will make a donation."
The musicians are all volunteers, and come from all walks of life.
"The people who play in the Pops are anyone from kids in high school - actually I think we have one girl in middle schools - up through age eightysomething," Walton said. "Many of them have been playing for decades."
The nonprofit relies on grants and donations, and hasn't held a fundraiser since the pandemic, so the hope is to get a big turnout for this one.
"Pasta and Pops is our theme, so there will be a pasta lunch," Walton said. "We're going to have three groups of our members play for you during that time. And then we have a silent auction with many items, and they're reasonably priced."
The orchestra's purpose is to bring music to the community and instill a lifelong love of the arts.
"A lot of people they can't afford to go to some of the other events in town," Walton said. "And as we said, we like to give free concerts, but we hope you make a donation; and it exposes kids to music."
