Extreme heat shuttered several of Vitalant’s blood drives last week, and the senior donation recruitment manager says the nonprofit is hoping the community can help them make up for the setback.
“Here locally just in Northern Nevada in the past seven days, we collected 50 less units of blood than we were planning on, so we need to replace those units. We were slow anyway coming into July,” Scott Edward said on Monday.
He added that Vitalant collected 140 fewer donations this June compared to last, and Northern Nevada needs to collect 150 units of blood every day to keep up with hospital demand.
While giving blood at Vitalant’s location on Terminal parkway, one man said that he’s inspired to donate because he knows it’s helping the community.
“I would encourage people to come and donate,” said Shane Burgess. “It’s a good feeling after you get done, knowing that you’ve given blood, and it doesn’t take very long.”
