The Washoe County District Attorney's Office has determined that a July 2020 police shooting was accidental "and therefore lacking the willful mental state required for criminal liability."

Prosecutors say Reno Police officers were called to South Virginia Street for a traffic stop on July 26, 2020. When they arrived, officers say the suspect, Christopher Sheahan was not compliant.

Body camera video shows officers repeatedly telling Sheahan to get on the ground. When he did not comply with the officer's commands, that is when authorities say a deputy deployed his TASER.

Police say the deputy missed hitting the suspect and struck a Reno officer in the knee. They say the officer then unintentionally discharged his gun, shooting the suspect in the right shoulder.

Officers say the 43-year-old suspect was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sparks Police took over the investigation as part of the regional protocol.

The report ends, "Based upon a review of the entire investigation presented by the SPD and the application of relevant Nevada statutory and decisional authorities to the known facts and circumstances surrounding the shooting on July 26, 2020, of Christopher Sheahan, the actions of Reno Police Officer Richard Jager were accidental and therefore lacking the willful mental state required for criminal liability. Unless new circumstances come to light which contradict the factual foundation upon which this decision is made, this case is officially closed."

Reno traffic stop turns into officer involved shooting after a deputy unintentionally strikes officer with taser.

Reno Police says an officer was struck by a taser after a deputy missed the suspect, causing the officer to discharge their weapon the morning of July 26, 2020. The shot fired hit the suspect in the shoulder.

Authorities say a Washoe County Sheriff's Deputy responded to a report of a reckless driver and began a routine traffic stop around 8:30 a.m. However, the driver did not cooperate leading the deputy to call for help.

"One of our Reno police officers was in the area and responded to assist. When the officer arrived on scene, an officer-involved shooting did occur. The suspect in this case was injured and was transported to an area hospital for treatment and was listed as stable condition," says Reno Police Department PIO Travis Warren.

Reno Police say responding officers arrived to see deputies pointing tasers at the suspect, a 43-year-old Reno resident, who was not complying with the deputy's commands.

Officers attempted to assist in the arrest of the suspect, but at one point when the deputy was telling the suspect what to do the suspect stepped toward the deputies.

Body camera footage shows the suspect explaining an intent run from the officers, stepping toward the officers offering his belongings.

Reno Police say that is when a deputy moved around the suspect, deploying a taser and missing the suspect, but striking one of the officers in the knee.

The officer who was struck by a taser then unintentionally discharged a shot from their gun, which struck the suspect in the right shoulder.

Officers and deputies on scene then took the suspect into custody and immediately began giving first aid to the suspect's gunshot wound until emergency transport arrived. The suspect was then taken to the hospital where he later recovered from his injuries, and has since been released.

The suspect was issued a citation for reckless driving and obstructing and resisting an officer by the Sparks Police Department.

RPD says regional OIS protocol has been enacted, so in the coming month there will be more information released from the investigation such as the tactics the officers used as well as use of force.
