Come with me and you'll see "Wonka's" full box office domination.
After months of hype and advertising, "Wonka," the prequel to the Gene Wilder classic "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," easily claimed the number one spot at the weekend box office.
The movie, which was warmly received by critics and audiences, opened about $9 million above what box office analysts had predicted with $39 million, and with good word of mouth should have long legs through the holiday season.
Overseas "Wonka" has been a juggernaut, grossing $112 million since opening in foreign territories last weekend for a global total of more than $151 million.
In second is a movie that has already shown off its legs, dropping very slightly from weekend to weekend.
"The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" was initially written off by analysts as a commercial failure but weekend by weekend has become one of the fall's few real success stories.
The $5.8 million it made this weekend represents a 37% drop from last weekend. Its domestic total is nearing $150 million and outside the U.S. it has made nearly $145 million, making $300 million worldwide easily within reach.
Dropping more severely was last weekend's number one movie, the Hayao Miyazaki anime "The Boy and the Heron," which fell 60% to finish the weekend in third with $5.17 million.
It has so far made just over $23 million in the U.S., while overseas it has made nearly $87 million for a global total of almost $110 million.
Another Japanese import claimed the number four spot. "Godzilla Minus One" was off just 43% from last weekend, good for $4.9 million. It has made more than $34 million in North America and nearly $30 million elsewhere for a worldwide gross of more than $64 million. Not bad for a movie with a reported $15 million budget.
Closing out the top five is the animated sequel "Trolls: Band Together." The poppy, kaleidoscopic kids flick brought in $4 million for the weekend, bringing its U.S. box office to nearly $89 million with another $95 million coming from overseas for a global total of more than $183 million to date.
