Turkey is implementing extensive security measures for the upcoming NATO summit, deploying thousands of police and banning public gatherings. The country has also converted a former military airfield into a new airport facility to host NATO leaders. These actions aim to safeguard the summit and demonstrate Turkey’s commitment to NATO. On July 7–8, leaders from all 32 member states, including U.S. President Donald Trump, are expected to gather in Ankara. The summit will focus on defense spending and the U.S. role in the alliance. Turkey has often acted independently within NATO but is now leaning closer to the West.
