Old Railway Headquarters Given New Life As The Depot Craft Brewery and Distillery

A historical Reno building on 4th Street has been given new life after it was recently renovated into the Depot Craft Brewery and Distillery.

It was used as the headquarters for the Nevada-California-Oregon Railway, and the new owners think it is the perfect place to open their business.

"When you look at the building and the architecture, it's absolutely stunning," said Justin Stafford, General Manager of The Depot. "For the scope of the project, we wanted to open the Depot's square footage and location, and available parking we're able to put in. It just sort of all worked out together."

It was built in 1910, and was part of the 238-mile railroad stretch to Lakeview, Oregon. Now, the new owners have turned the former three-story headquarters into a bar and restaurant with six different craft beers, homemade whiskey, with other spirits available later this year.

Some local historians told Channel 2 News via telephone how pleased they are that the Depot has kept much of its original artifacts, like a vault inside the men's bathroom.

The Depot owners also tell us they are making history by becoming Nevada's first brewery and distillery all under one roof.

"We're the first ones to combine both facilities into one," Stafford said. "It's becoming a bit more popular across the United States, but it's still a very rare occurrence."

Customers told us businesses like this are a way to boost the reputation of the 4th Street Corridor.

"It would be great to see a lot of these old buildings go back up and become a natural business again," said Debbie Mason of Spanish Springs.

"It's a great area for people to really take a look at," said Bill Kolton of Southwest Reno. "With Midtown, Downtown, the Arts District, the Riverwalk, I'm really pleased with what they're doing."
