UPDATE:Â The Pershing County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded to the Humboldt Sink for a motorist assist, when the incident turned into an officer-involved shooting on Wednesday.
Officials said during a wants and warrants check, the motorist was discovered to have an active, extraditable felony warrant from New Mexico. They said the motorist actively resisted arrest and law enforcement attempted to deploy a taser, unsuccessfully.
Officials said while evading arrest, the motorist got into his vehicle, an early model Winnebago and he drove away. They said officers verbally told him to leave the vehicle, but he accelerated and hit a patrol unit head-on, forcing the patrol unit off the roadway.
Pershing County Sheriff's Office says officers pursued him, and two more law enforcement vehicles were struck by the Winnebago. They said after a short chase, law enforcement was able to force the vehicle to stop.
Officials said the motorist refused to exit the Winnebago. They said a K9 unit on scene was deployed, at which time the motorist exited the vehicle and began stabbing the K9 in the neck with a knife.
Our crew on scene says the K9 survived the encounter.
Officials said having exhausted all other options, a Pershing County deputy fired his gun and shot the motorist in the upper torso. They said he was taken to the hospital and later died from his wound.
Officials say the Nevada Department of Public Safety is investigating the incident. The name of the motorist is being withheld until next of kin are notified.
