Security Prompts Rushed End to Nevada Democrats Convention

The political meltdown in Las Vegas this weekend that started out as the Democratic State Convention is still making national headlines today. And it says a lot about where Bernie Sanders and his campaign may be headed from here.

"This was a bit of surprise, but it was something that I really think has been brewing for a long time now," said Fred Lokken, Political Science Professor at TMCC. "And this actually shows that the Democrats are as fractured as the Republicans in this election cycle."

And even today, some are looking for Sanders to show accountability.

"I think he should apologize publicly for what happened in Nevada," said Nevada State Democratic Party Chairwoman, Roberta Lange.

"I'm not suggesting that Bernie Sanders encouraged this, but I do believe that the buck stops at the top of the ticket," Lokken added.

But what does it mean for the campaign overall? Hillary Clinton could pick up supporters including Democrats who drift from Sanders, and Republicans who just can't bring themselves to support Donald Trump.

The other impact could be that if Clinton gets the nomination, Sanders supporters could just drop out of the process and not vote.

"This could really lead to the lowest voter turnout for a presidential election that we've seen in decades," Lokken said.

But it will no doubt impact more than who goes to the White House.

"There is always the trickle down effect," Lokken said. "If Democrats just don't vote it will impact the U.S. Senate and the state legislature. The same if Republicans just don't turn out."
