The Reno Police Department has released new details on an incident that happened near the Reno-Sparks Convention Center on Wednesday afternoon.

They said around 4 p.m., officers responded to South Virginia Street in the area on a report of a suicidal man holding a knife and bleeding from his neck.

Reno Police said upon their arrival, the man was uncooperative and walking in the median of Virginia Street. They said he refused officers' commands to drop the knife and at one point, he turned toward the officers, still armed with the knife.

They said officers tased him at that time.

Reno Police said as officers tried to restrain the man, he continued to fight with police and the officers were exposed to the blood. After a struggle, the officers were able to handcuff him and provide immediate medical attention.

Reno Police said the man was taken to Renown with life-threatening injuries to his neck. They said he went through surgery and he is stable.

They said their officers did not have any injuries, but they went through blood exposure protocol.

Reno Police said South Virginia Street was closed for decontamination protocol through the Reno Fire Department, but it has since reopened to traffic.
