This Fourth of July weekend, many people are taking advantage of what the area has to offer, including summer skiing.
"A bikini," said Katie Dunst, referring to the only thing she was wearing at Squaw Valley Friday.
Many people were doing the same thing. Some wore swimsuits, some wore short-sleeved shirts, some wore no shirts at all.
"There was some frozen granular in the early morning," said Dan Sobel of San Francisco. "It started to soften up a little bit. There's a bit of a surface hoar, so bit of an avy risk up there but I got my airy start, so we'll be alright."
"The conditions are slappin' like butter," said Brandon Quimson of Freemont. "You hit it, and you're just sliding. You come in like whoopow. You slide thru, hit the air, 360. BAM. Like nothing. Easy. Every time."
There is a seven foot base for these skiers and boarders to slap and slide through. For some, it's hard to believe it's the middle of summer.
"It's July 5th today," said Leisl Hepburn, the Public Relations Director at Squaw Valley. "212 days of operation. We are now in our eighth month of skiing and riding."
In 2017, the resort stayed open until July 15th. However, this year, Squaw Valley is one of six resorts around the nation that is still open for skiing and snowboarding. Squaw Valley will close for the season on Sunday, July 7, 2019.
All of that snow must go somewhere. Minutes away at Boca Reservoir, you won't find skiers and snowboarder, but jet skiers and snow boarders.
"I whip around like crazy," said Markus Duarte, a jet skier from Reno." I like that rush. It feels good, you know. I think I'm alright."
"Yesterday, we skied at Squaw. We got seven runs in on the 4th of July," said Jessica Fewless of Glenshire. "Today, we're doing water sports."
