From Alexa to Ring, we're seeing more smart technology in homes these days. Some houses are even being built with integrated systems.
The Horne family moved to Verdi two months ago and their new home has a smart technology system built right in.
"We were looking all over Sparks and Reno and we came here and found out the house had smart home technology, and that was like the selling point for me," said Anthony Horne.
He says it's something that adds convenience.
"You can control anything in the house," he said. "The air, heat, you can open the garage, play music - we start the morning off on a mellow vibe and at nighttime you can play crashing waves or thunderstorms, that's what my daughter likes to listen to."
It's also something that helps provide peace of mind. Â
The doorbell has an alert and a camera.
"It's very sensitive," said Michelle Horne. "When people drive by or someone leaves a package, we get a ding on our phone and I find that comforting to know that when there's someone coming in close proximity to my house, I'm at least aware of that. Specifically when I'm out doing my daily errands, but also when we're vising my mother-in-law in Mississippi. It's important to know and feel comfortable that you have an understanding of the proximity of who's in your house when you're not there."
The alarm can be set remotely and it's all integrated with other emergency systems.
"It makes me feel safe and protected," Anthony Horne said. "There's times I'll be at work and I'll get a ding on my phone that says the alarm hasn't been set. Â So I'll go on my phone and set the alarm for her, because I know she's upstairs relaxing, so I'll do that and it gives you a sense of security that your family can be safe while you're away, since I'm the protector."
It's technology that can be added to older homes as long as they have a wireless connection.
"A lot of people have smart TVs, so it can be integrated in any system," said Tayona Tate, a Global Real Estate Advisor. "So the age of the home is really not a factor."
She says this kind of technology can add to the overall value of a home.
"We're estimating about 11% more value to your home when you're adding a smart home system," Tate said. "You'll always see a return on value, especially when you're adding systems that include security and energy efficiency."
