With two house fires in our area overnight, it’s a reminder to check that your smoke alarms are working. In both incidents smoke detectors alerted the people inside so they could get out safely. It’s a good reminder to check your own smoke detectors at home.
A smoke detector will have a button in the middle and to check it you have to press and hold for two seconds.
They last ten years, are cheap to acquire, and help you hear a sound smoke doesn’t make.
Firefighter Trey Palmer tells us you should have one of them in every sleeping room. “Most fires happen in the middle of the night when people are sleeping, the early warning system of that detector is critical,” he says.
He says the right spot to install them is usually in the middle of the ceiling.
Making sure your fire detector has a working battery. It only takes a few seconds and it can save you time down the road. He also says in case of a fire, closing the door between you and the fire can be vital.
“It's real important that you have two ways out, and if you have children that they know how to get out,” says Palmer.
