Symposium on Race to Be Held Next Week in Reno

A week from today law enforcement, community and religious leaders plan to come together to discuss building stronger relations and counteract racial prejudices.

"You have to expose yourself to something different so you can work out those biases. I mean even if you've had bad experiences, that doesn't mean just because one person does it that everyone else is like that,” says  Norris DuPree of Transformation Therapy and Behavioral Consultation.

The second Symposium on Race and Barbeque is being held at the University of Nevada in response to conflicts between law enforcement and minority groups in cities like Baltimore, New York and Ferguson.

While those same tensions don't exist in Northern Nevada, law enforcement says it's important to have a dialogue with the community to prevent them from developing.

"This is one additional way we can show that community involvement and community inclusion by bringing all of our law enforcement partners together,” says Washoe County Sheriff Chuck Allen.

The symposium will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on May 21st on the third floor of the Joe Crowley Student Union at the University of Nevada.
