For parents worried about what the fall semester will look like, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak also weighed in on Monday about education during the pandemic. He said the state is helping schools get ready for the fall semester.
As school districts meet by video conference to prepare for the new school year during the pandemic, Governor Sisolak says the state is also getting ready. "We are working now to purchase more PPE for those schools that are going to be going in-person. We also want to provide testing for the folks going in whether they are faculty or administration. So we continue to be involved," said Governor Sisolak.
When asked what his preference was for schools to open in-person, online, or a mixture of both, he said." I'm not going to weigh in on that because I don't want to influence the superintendents of the various districts."
The state will be keeping an eye on other parts of the country. "Some schools across the country opened today. So we'll be looking in terms of how that works and what the best avenue is moving forward," said Governor Sisolak.
At this point,the governor is letting the individual districts make their own decisions."The number of students in a a school in Lovelock is no where near the number of students in classroom in Clark County or Washoe County. They are different. Everybody is different and that needs to be taken into account. For some folks the daycare or nutrition is not a situation. For others its the most important thing about the school day," said Governor Sisolak.
The governor says not everyone agrees on how kids should learn during the pandemic. But his goal is clear. "I want to make sure the students are in a safe environment," said Governor Sisolak.
The governor hopes the districts all submit plans soon, so parents can have some certainty. All plans have to approved their school board no less than 20 days before the first day of class.
School boards for Washoe County, Carson City, and South Lake-Tahoe all meet Tuesday, with discussion of the upcoming school year on some of their agendas.
