Beto O'Rourke publicly lambasted President Trump's border wall decision from no more than a football field away at his Texas rally on Monday.
O'Rourke's event was close enough to President Trump's rally that "God Bless America" could be heard over nearby loudspeakers.Â
"With the eyes of the country upon us, all of us together are going to make our stand, here in one of the safest cities in the United States of America -- safe not because of walls, but in sprite of walls," O'Rourke said on stage. "We treat each other with dignity and respect. That is the way we make our community and our country safe."Â
President Trump took the stage just as O'Rourke was finishing up his speech, his supporters leaving shortly after.Â
O'Rourke's supporters left the ball field and President Trump's speech was audible.Â
President Trump mocked O'Rourke's recent Senate loss in Texas where he raised a total of $80 million and lost by three percentage points.
President Trump said that the former congressman "lost an election to Ted Cruz."Â
O'Rourke said he will come to a conclusion regarding his presidential bid by the end of the month but would not discuss any plans on Monday night.Â
Instead he focused his speech on President Trump's declaration to create a wall separating the United States and Mexico.
O'Rourke referred to President Trump several times throughout his speech without directly mentioning his name.Â
He referenced the President's 2015 comments about Mexican immigrants being "rapists" and "criminals," telling the crowd that immigrants commit crimes at lower-than-average rates.Â
O'Rourke highlighted various nonprofit organizations and activist groups in El Paso that are geared toward helping immigrants immediately upon their arrival into the United States.Â
"We stand for America and we stand against walls," he said. "We know there is no bargain in which we can sacrifice some of our humanity to gain a little more security."Â
O'Rourke's speech came after he conducted a one-mile march protesting President Trump's decision to build a border wall.Â
