The Washoe County School District is asking residents to help shape the future of the retired Stead Elementary School building and its adjoining three-plus acres as officials consider what comes next for the property.

According to the Washoe County School District, the district recently built a new Stead Elementary School nearby that will open in August with space for more than 700 students. Because the retired campus will not be needed immediately, district officials are evaluating possible future uses for the site.

Potential options include selling or leasing the property to help fund new schools or school improvements, or partnering with local government agencies or community organizations to address community needs.

The WCSD Board of Trustees voted during its June 23 meeting to move forward with the external reuse evaluation process for the former Stead Elementary School under Board Policy 7086, the Reuse and Disposition Framework for Closed Schools, and applicable Nevada Revised Statutes.

As part of the process, the district is seeking feedback from students, families, staff, and neighbors through an online survey available from June 29 through July 17. The district has provided surveys in both English and Spanish, along with additional information about the reuse evaluation process.
