The community learned about resources available to them.
You might see blue pinwheels around Reno this April -- as local organizations honor National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
The Children's Cabinet holds an annual event where they provide a space for community members to learn about resources available to them at the Neil Road recreation center.
Ma'kayla Porter, a volunteer who is an In Community Outreach Specialist, said, "I think a lot of what it takes to find a resource as a person needing support is a lot about who you know and when you get in with one organization, then you realize all of the other ones that are available."
Different organizations came together to provide a space for community members to learn about resources available to them at the Neil Road Recreation Center.
They told us one of the biggest challenges they face is people not knowing the number of resources out there.
Thelma Alviles, a Community Education Coordinator for Children's Cabinet, told us, "If somebody needs help, they can reach for the phone and call us. And that's why it's important for us to make sure the community knows that they're not by themselves, that they're not alone. And we're behind them."
Safe Place, which is run through the Children's Cabinet told us it's common for people to be scared to reach out for help when they need it. Their goal is to prevent child abuse before it happens, but they can't help if they're not contacted. They provide twenty-four-hour care for teens ages twelve through seventeen.
Lee Holt, a Safe Place Street Outreach Program Coordinator, said, "It can be so scary to reach out, especially in a time when it's feeling very vulnerable and scary. But we're here to help, and it's a very non-judgmental place. And we are just genuinely wanting to help and connect with them, and we care about them as a whole human."
Many of the programs that are offered through the organizations are free. Families are encouraged to learn more about the help available for both them and their children.
The mission is to help children and keep families together.
