Education Alliance of Washoe County is hosting the Run for Education postponed until 2021 amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The event was originally scheduled for October 18, 2020 but in order to stay compliant with state guidelines, it has since been postponed.

Event officials say about 8,000 people attend the event at Scheels in Sparks each October.

The goal is to raise money for physical education and nutrition programs in the Washoe County School District.

"The Run for Education is all about student health and wellness," said Kendall Inskip, Executive Director of Education Alliance of Washoe County. "Given the large crowd the event draws, the future uncertainties of the pandemic and the well-being of our community, our priority is on the health and safety of our students, families, and everyone involved.”

This year, Education Alliance is focusing funding efforts for technology, especially now that WCSD middle and high school students will participate in part-time distance learning. Officials say this will help parents who may not be able to provide their students with the proper equipment needed for the new distance learning model.

“There are more than 11,000 students without technology at home so we’re switching gears to help kids cross the distance learning finish line this year! We have received donations from generous local donors since the pandemic struck Washoe County, but we are asking our caring community for financial and laptop donations to ensure every student in need stays connected and continues to be successful in school,” said Inskip.

Officials say the 2021 Run for Education is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, October 24, 2021.
