Trustees Take Oath of Office at First WCSD Board Meeting of 2015

From the Washoe County School District:

The Washoe County School District (WCSD) welcomed newly-elected and re-elected members of the Board of Trustees during its Jan. 13th meeting. Veronica Frenkel and Nick Smith took their places on the board after the swearing-in ceremony. Trustee John Mayer was sworn in for his second term. Dr. Angela Taylor was previously sworn in as Trustee for District E at a ceremony last month.

Immediately following the ceremony, board members voted unanimously to select John Mayer as board president, Dr. Angela Taylor as vice president, and Dr. Barbara McLaury as clerk to the board for the coming year.

“I am so pleased to welcome our new and returning board members,” said Traci Davis, interim WCSD superintendent. “I know we all look forward to working together under the leadership of President John Mayer, who brings such extensive experience to our board as a teacher, principal, trustee, and dedicated advocate for all of our children. We have a wonderful team in place, and we're eager to begin this new chapter as a District.”

“This is a new beginning, and I think we have a great team of trustees,” said President Mayer. “We are going forward to create a new culture in the school district. We are all pulling together for our students, and I look forward to seeing what we will accomplish together.”

The Board of Trustees plays a lead role in governing the Washoe County School District. Currently, trustees are working closely with staff to update the strategic plan, Envision WCSD 2015 – Investing In Our Future, which puts forward goals and guiding principles for the District. Additionally, as the 2015 Nevada legislative session gets underway next month, trustees will be working with staff members to represent WCSD in Carson City.

Veronica Frenkel represents District F, which encompasses most of the eastern part of the District. She is the parent of a student who attends a WCSD school, and owns her own consulting business, Pathways Consulting LLC.

Nick Smith represents District C, which includes the north valleys. Mr. Smith has two children and works in management at a restaurant in Sparks.

Dr. Angela Taylor represents District E, which covers northwest Reno. She owns a consulting company, Guardian Quest, and also served in several leadership roles in support of students at the University of Nevada, Reno.

John Mayer has begun his second term on the WCSD Board of Trustees, and represents District B in Sparks. He retired from WCSD in 2000 after serving as a teacher, coach, and principal. The new and returning members of the board join Dr. Barbara McLaury (District G), Howard Rosenberg (District D), and Lisa Ruggerio (District A).
