Washoe County Opens New Meal Site for Senior Citizens in Spanish Springs

Washoe County is celebrating a new addition to its Senior Nutrition Program. On Tuesday, officials commemorated the grand opening of a new meal site for seniors, with a ribbon-cutting.

The new site is located in Spanish Springs. Besides a hot meal, the facility also acts as a community center to promote a healthy social life for senior citizens.

It's one of eleven sites across the county.  Amber Howell, Director for Washoe County Human Services Agency says, "21,000 seniors are getting a warm meal in Washoe County, annually."

The county serves more than 400,000 senior meals a year. Catholic Charities provides all of those meals in partnership with the Human Services Agency, but it's so much more than just food.

Marie Baxter, CEO for Catholic Charities says, "Many of them--they wait all day for that doorbell to ring, for that meal to be delivered, or for the opportunity to come to a site like this and have not only that wonderful meal, but really that connection."

Seniors over the age of 60 can get a hot meal Tuesday through Friday from 10 A.M. until 2 P.M. They will also be able to socialize with card games, bingo and occasionally, live entertainment.

A voluntary two dollar donation is recommended per meal, but it will be free for any who may need it. The site is located near the Spanish Springs library at the Lazy 5 Regional Park.
