Washoe County Sheriff Chuck Allen announced recently that he has appointed Chief Deputy Susan Schilling to the position of Undersheriff. Sheriff Allen said that he has also appointed former Patrol Captain Frank Schumann to Chief Deputy over the Detention/Courts Bureau.
As Undersheriff, Schilling serves as the Chief Administrator and Executive Officer to the Sheriff. Her responsibilities include strategic operations, budget, and oversight of all Sheriff’s Office Bureaus.
Undersheriff Schilling began her law enforcement career in 1998 as a Nevada Parole and Probation Officer in Las Vegas. In 2005, she was promoted to Lieutenant and transferred to the Nevada Highway Patrol. In 2014, she became the first female promoted to the rank of Major/Deputy Chief.
Sheriff Allen appointed her to the position of Chief Deputy at the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office in November of 2015.
Undersheriff Schilling earned a Master of Science in Performance Improvement with Distinction from Grantham University and a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She also graduated from Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command and holds an Executive Certificate from the Nevada Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
Undersheriff Schilling replaces former Undersheriff John Spencer who retired in March of this year.
Chief Deputy Schumann began his career as a Deputy Sheriff with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office in 1993. As a Deputy, he worked in all areas of the Sheriff’s Office and served as a Field Training Officer in both Detention and Patrol. He was also a member of the Hostage Negotiation and SWAT Teams. After promoting to Lieutenant, Schumann commanded both the Detention Response Team (Detention) and Major Accident Investigation Team (Patrol), and served as the Special Events Lieutenant.
Schumann was promoted to Captain in 2013. He served as Captain of Special Operations for two and a half years and Patrol Captain for the last year and a half.
As Chief Deputy of the Detention/Courts Bureau, Schumann oversees the operation of the Washoe County Consolidated Detention Facility as well as the protection of the Mills Lane Justice Complex, the Second Judicial District Court, and all associated departments
Chief Deputy Schumann holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice, a Management P.O.S.T. Certificate, and is a graduate of the National Jail Leadership Command Academy and Senior Management Institute for Police.  He’s a certified Rangemaster, as well as a certified Defensive Tactics and Taser Instructor.
