Last weekend was rather warm for this time of year. We broke the daily record of 87 degrees this past Saturday by one degree. After that, then the cooling process began. We dropped twenty degrees in a few days. This quick change in temperature can be a shock to the system. We’ve been at or above average since the end of April. This is not unheard of. Something similar has happened each of the past five years in Reno.
We’ve been in the 80’s four times already this month. Last year it happened five times during the entire month. Spring can be very random going from hot to cold. Some years May weather brings us lots of warm weather and other years not as much.
Looking at the number of days below 66 degrees, it is pretty similar to days above 79 degrees. All going to show the variability that comes with spring. In 2017 we hit 80 degrees or more thirteen times during the month of May. None in 2010.
The Sierra has seen its fair share of wild weather too. South Lake Tahoe broke the old record of 74 degrees this past Saturday by one degree.
Then come Tuesday this is what it looked like up at Alpine Meadows as snow was falling. Tahoe City usually sees a few inches of snowfall each May.Â
Fall and spring are known for wacky weather. We are starting to warm up while still getting rid of the cold air. It is this collision of air masses that increases our wind speeds and causes severe weather in the plains.
