UPDATE: November 2020

A local woman will now spend the rest of her life in prison after she was convicted of first-degree murder earlier this year.

The Washoe County District Attorney's Office says 40-year-old Katherine Fletcher was sentenced recently for killing the father of her young child.

Officials said the case began on July 28, 2016 when the Reno Police Department responded to Oxbow Nature Park on a report of a shooting. They said officers discovered Robert Trask unresponsive on the observation deck of the park, and he had a single gunshot wound to his upper back. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Officials said a single shell casing was found within a few feet of the shooting scene.

They said detectives interviewed a witness who had heard the gunshot, turned and saw a woman fleeing the scene, pulling a young boy by the hand. Officials said officers identified the suspect as Fletcher, and learned that Fletcher and the victim had been in a protracted custody dispute resulting in Fletcher having very limited custody rights. They said the eight-year-old child was identified as the subject of the dispute.

Officials said during the custody dispute, Fletcher had made numerous and repeated false allegations of abuse against the victim to try and regain custody rights.

They said on the night of the shooting Fletcher and the victim met at Oxbow Park and after nearly an hour, Fletcher shot the victim, with the child witnessing the shooting.

Officials said in a police interview, Fletcher claimed not to know how the victim was shot and denied being the shooter.

They said the child told police that his mother claimed a man shot from the bushes.

Officials said detectives later learned Fletcher had bought a pistol in the weeks before the murder and went target shooting. They said despite searches, the firearm was never recovered.

They said Fletcher had a prior conviction for child neglect and for burglary in possession of a firearm.

Officials said Fletcher was arrested and the Attorney's Office filed open murder charges against her.

UPDATE, August 2016: Reno Police say they have arrested Katherine Fletcher on Friday and have charged her for one count of Open Murder with the Use of a Deadly Weapon. Detectives say Fletcher was an acquaintance of the victim and the victim's name and identity are still pending notification of next of kin.

Original Story: A suspect is on the run after shooting and killing a man at a Oxbow Park in West Reno on Thursday night. Police are calling it a homicide.

It happened around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, at the small park between the Truckee River and Fourth Street.

Reno Police were called to the shooting and when they arrived, they found the victim lying in the park. He was still alive and first responders attempted to revive him.

That man was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

We're told there is a lot of vegetation at the park. The thick trees and bushes have made it difficult for police to gather evidence.

John Mandagaran with the Reno Police Department said, "Obviously we have to try to get through it if we have evidence in a wooded area like this. We have to find it. But it's difficult, even with dogs.  They can't get through it."

At this point, police have hardly any leads. The suspect or suspects are still at large.

They need your help. If you know anything, call Secret Witness at 322-4900 or text your tip to 847-411.

Police were still on scene gathering evidence Thursday night. They're hoping to have the park back open by Friday morning.

Police were not able to release any further information on the victim, or an identity.
